Introduction Education is a fundamental instrument for national development, social transformation, and personal growth. Understanding the meaning, aims, and philosophical foundations of education provides teachers with the conceptual framework needed to guide teaching and learning processes effectively. Philosophy of education helps educators reflect on the purpose of education, the values it promotes, and the methods used in teaching and learning. In Nigeria, the organisation of education is guided by policies and structures designed to achieve national development goals. Knowledge of the Nigerian education system and school structure enables teachers to understand how education is administered, the stages of schooling, and the policies that guide curriculum implementation and educational practice. Furthermore, teaching is not only a technical activity but also a professional and ethical practice. Teachers are expected to demonstrate professionalism, adhere to ethical standards, and exercise agency in their roles. Teacher professionalism, ethics, and agency emphasise commitment to professional standards, responsible conduct, continuous professional development, and the ability of teachers to make informed decisions that improve teaching and learning outcomes. This module, therefore, introduces participants to the foundations of education and the professional responsibilities of teachers, enabling them to understand the philosophical basis of education, the structure of the Nigerian education system, and the ethical and professional expectations of the teaching profession.
**INTRODUCTION** Foundations of Education and Teacher Professionalism is a core field of teacher education that integrates the theoretical foundations of education with the ethical, legal, and professional responsibilities of teachers. It examines education from philosophical, sociological, and historical perspectives, emphasising teaching as a recognised profession governed by standards, ethics, and accountability. Teacher professionalism gained prominence following educational reforms and global advocacy for quality education. **INTRODUCTION** Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) refers to aspects of the educational process involving, in addition to general education, the study of technologies and related sciences, and the acquisition of practical skills, attitudes, understanding and knowledge relating to occupations in various sectors of economic and social life (UNESCO, 2001; ILO, 2001). TVET represents a range of learning experiences that are relevant to the world of work. It is a form of education that emphasises the acquisition of practical skills, technical knowledge and attitudes for employment in various sectors of economic and social life. Unlike purely academic education, TVET is designed to prepare learners directly for specific occupations. It encompasses formal, non-formal and informal learning, including apprenticeships, skills development programmes for youth and adult that equip them with occupation-specific knowledge, skills, and competencies across fields such as engineering, healthcare, business, and technology (ILO, 2021). TVET serves a critical function by bridging the gap between classroom learning and workplace demands through addressing skills gap, enhance employability, foster entrepreneurship and support national development. By emphasising practical, applied learning laboratory work, simulations, and industry-aligned projects, TVET directly addresses labour-market needs and enhances graduates’ immediate employability. In the same vein, TVET requires teachers to combine trade expertise with effective teaching methodology. The focus is not only on what to teach in a vocational subject, but how to teach it in ways that develop practical competence. This implies that effective TVET is a function of the educator’s professional expertise in both the occupational area and its methodology. This involves adequate understanding of TVET theories, sound knowledge of educational psychology and methodology as well as mastery of the subject matter. TVET teaching differs from purely academic instruction as earlier mentioned because it is: Performance-based, Competency-driven, Industry-aligned and Practice-oriented. This module is specifically designed to help learners: i. Apply subject-specific teaching methods ii. Design appropriate learning activities iii. Deliver practical and competency-based lessons **CLASSROOM APPLICATION** The classroom activities that can be conducted to achieve the stated objectives are: i. Apply subject-specific teaching methods in the various areas of specialisation of TVET including Demonstration and Guided Practice ii. Design appropriate learning activities for TVET lessons involving Project-Based Tasks iii. Deliver practical and competency-based lessons effectively in TVET involving Competency Based Practical Assessment These activities ensure that TVET lessons are practical, skill-oriented, and focused on developing competencies required for real workplace situations. **HOW TO STUDY THIS UNIT** 1\. Reflect on your trade area (e.g. Hair dressing, ICT, Electrical Installation, Automobile Technology, Building Construction, Fashion Design, and Agricultural Technology). 2\. Relate each teaching method discussed to your specialisation. 3\. Attempt the practical activities provided. 4\. Prepare a sample competency-based lesson outline. **REFLECTION** 1\. Reflect on the importance of safety, proper management, and effective organisation during laboratory activities. 2\. Ponder on how different assessment methods help measure learners’ understanding and guide improvement. 3\.
